Would Statehood make any difference to the Nuclear Waste Dump?
The proposed radioactive waste management facility could be placed on any Commonwealth land so long as it stores waste generated from the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
South Australia avoided the waste facility being placed in that State because the Federal Court ruled the Commonwealth had wrongly claimed urgency in the public interest in acquiring the land in South Australia. The Commonwealth could place the facility on land correctly acquired or already owned by the Commonwealth in South Australia or in any State.
The decision not to place the facility in South Australia was taken a few months out from the 2004 Commonwealth election. South Australia has 23 seats in both Houses of the Commonwealth Parliament, the Northern Territory has four. The Coalition Government in Canberra is said to have made a pragmatic decision not to pursue placing the facility in South Australia based on the likely risk of losing South Australian based seats in at the 2004 election.

Nominate now!
Friday 27 January 2012 is the big day.
That’s the day that nominations open for those Territorians who want to represent their communities as delegates to the next April’s Constitutional Convention in Darwin.
The main aim of the Convention is to debate and create a draft State Constitution, which we will need if we want to become a State.
So if you care about Statehood and you care about your community, you should think seriously about nominating and registering your interest today.
Please Note - all dates are postponed until further notice.
Vote for your representative
Next April’s Constitutional Convention In Darwin will be a people’s convention – with Territorians from across the length and breadth of the Territory coming together to represent their communities.
These elected representatives will help draft an NT State Constitution and help shape our future in the Territory.
That’s why it’s important that you vote for the person you think will best represent your family and the interests of your community on 24 March 2012.
So check out the ntstate7 website after nominations close on 1 March 2012 and see who will be standing to represent your community in your electorate.
Please Note - all dates are postponed until further notice.
Support your convention delegate
The Constitutional Convention Delegate Elections, which will be held on 24 March 2012, will see three delegates elected from each of the Territory’s 25 electorates. These delegates will head to Darwin on 21 April 2012 to help draft a State Constitution for the Territory and represent the interests of their communities.
It’s a big task – which is why we all need to support our delegates in whatever way we can.
So talk to your delegates in the lead-up to the convention about the issues that are important to you and your family. You can also use facebook, twitter and our discussion blogs during the convention to talk directly to your delegates.
And remember – you can follow the debates and the activities at the convention as they happen by logging into the ntstate7 website.
Please Note - all dates are postponed until further notice.
Public feedback
Shortly after the Constitutional Convention finishes in late April 2012, the new draft State Constitution will be made available to all Territorians.
The aim is to produce a people’s constitution – one that reflects the hopes and aspirations of all Territorians.
That means all Territorians will have an opportunity to read the document and comment on its contents.
Please Note - all dates are postponed until further notice.
Alice Springs Convention
In 2013 – following extensive public consultation on the draft State Constitution – a second Constitutional Convention will convene in Alice Springs.
It will be attended by the same elected community delegates who attended the convention in Darwin – and the aim is to finalise the NT State Constitution.
Please Note - all dates are postponed until further notice.
The Statehood referendum
In late 2013, a referendum on Statehood is planned.
The referendum will ask Territorians if the time is right for the Territory to become Australia’s seventh State.
