Statehood is about equality – about having the same rights as every other Australian.

Darwin is home to some of the most talented and creative young people in the country – which is why I support statehood and equality for us all.

I really can’t think of one good reason why the Territory shouldn’t have the same rights as all the other states in this country.

I really want to help represent the people of Alice at the Constitutional Convention in Darwin next year and help create history.

I’m so excited that 16 and 17 year-olds will be able to stand for election as delegates to the Constitutional Convention and have the right to vote.

I find it unbelievable that Territorians like me have fewer rights than other Australians, which is why I support our push towards statehood.

Youth for statehood

Please Note - all dates are postponed until further notice.
The Legislative Assembly decided on Thursday 30 November to defer the holding of the election of candidates to the Constitutional Convention and the Convention itself until a date after the Northern Territory General Election which will take place on 25 August 2012.

As excitement builds in the lead-up to next April’s Constitutional Convention in Darwin, this website will keep Territorians up-to-date with activities and events, and all the latest information about the next steps towards Statehood.

Territorians are also encouraged to interact and contribute to the ntstate7 site through facebook, twitter and the discussion blogs.

The Constitutional Convention

The aim of the Constitutional Convention is to create an NT State Constitution – a crucial step in our journey toward Statehood.

This State Constitution will be created and debated by the people of the Territory. That’s why all Territorians are being encouraged to consider nominating as delegates to the convention when nominations open in late January.

Three delegates from each of our 25 electorates will represent their communities at the convention next year.

Raising community awareness

In the lead-up to the convention, Statehood Community Information Sessions will be held in and around all the Territory’s major centres. In addition, a committed team of Statehood Champions from across the Territory will be speaking up about Statehood and equality for all Territorians.

These Statehood Champions will not only be talking to Territorians about the Constitutional Convention, they will also be exploring some of the myths around Statehood.
